Child/ Human Rights, Peace, Education and Environment Protection

Introduction

This project titled “Strengthening Action for Child / Human Rights, Peace Education and Sustainable Environment in Ukhrul District, Manipur” is jointly supportedbyKZE-MISEREOR, Germany and Bread for the World,Germany.

Objective:The targeted communities have been oriented with RTE (Right to Education) Act, Child Rights, Human Rights, POCSO Act, sex education and environmental education.

Achievements/Outcomes

  1. The SMDCs of 15 Primary Schools out of 19 namely Kalhang, K-K High School, RazaiKhunou, Ngahui, Marangphung, Luireishimphung, Marem, Chungka, S. Tusom, Loushing, Kumram, Nongman, Ramsophung, Phalang and Maileng were able to organise co-curricular/ extra-curricular activities on their own by 15.3%. The dropout rate during 2017 academic session although negligible was reported at 6.2% among the partner high school students of classes IX & X in 2017 as against the baseline of 6.5% in 2016.

  1. 15 out of 20 villages have developed environment protection action plan out of which 6 villages have started implementing and promoting these action plans/resolutions in their own villages viz. Marem, Marangphung, East Tusom, Ramsophung, Loushing and Chungka)

  1. About 677 youths have been oriented on Human rights, Environmental Education,

Substance Abuse and POCSO Act 2012.

The following activities were carried out in order to obtain the above
outcomes/achievements

Parents/ couple workshop on child rights, human rights, women’s rights with partner villages: In ten (10) exclusive villages namely: Luireishimphung, Ngahui, Razai Khunou, Marem, Marangphung, Chungka, East Tusom, Loushing, L.Khunthak, Phalang, Village level workshop on Child Rights, Human/women Rights were conducted. In total 507 participants (parents, SMDC members, teachers and youth, church Leaders) were made aware of child rights, human/women rights, RTE Act and POCSO Act.  

On the other hand a joint/inter village workshop for three neighbouring villages Patbung, Nongman and Kumram was organised at Nongman- Patbung Junction. It was one platform to discuss about the common issues like demarcation of village boundaries, formulation of environment protection rules, forest and wildlife conservation, etc.

District Workshop on Women/ Human Rights Related Issues/ observation of IHRD/ IWD

A District Level International Human Rights Day celebration was organised at PHILA FOODS Training Centre on 10th Dec 2017 with a total participants of 46 (forty six) members comprising of youth, community leaders, students and parents. International Women‟s Day Celebration cum 1st Death Anniversary of Mrs. Thotchuila Hongray, Founder and Former Executive Secretary of PASDO was observed in which about 200 members participated. The special day was marked by lauding the contributions of all women of the world and in particular a tribute to a great woman – our beloved „Achui‟ who had dedicated her life for the cause of humanity and community service.

Area Level Meeting/ Capacitation Workshop/ Consultation of SMDC Federations

Four (4) Area Level Meetings were held, two at Chingai Cluster and two at Phungyar Cluster where 99 SMDC members (79 male and 20 female) participated during the meetings.

Frequent coordination with the SMDC members through meetings, visits to the villages, telephonic conversations, etc. was done by the

cluster coordinators from time to time. Monetary support to the SMDC Federation was also given for the purpose of networking, coordination and lobbying with the concerned educational departments.

Facilitating parents and teachers meeting in partner villages

Eight (8) nos. of parents and teachers meetings were conducted in partner villages for both the clusters. In all 168 members (115 males 53 females) participated in the meetings.

Focused Group Discussions with village institutions

Fourteen (14) Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted in both the clusters with 209 (149 male and 60 female) participants.

Networking, lobby and advocacy on CR/HR/WR

Three(3) consultative meetings were held in collaboration with UDACR/MACR on POCSO Act, JJ Act and Indian Laws vis-avisTangkhul Customary Law. 79 members participated during the meetings.   A District Level Peace conference was organised in collaboration with DSSS, VVD and SEDO at TTA Hall on 15th July 2017.185 members comprising of students, teachers, NGO leaders, and youths participated in the conference.  

PASDO supported two significant (2) numbers of one day seminar on career guidance was organised by Zingsho Katamnao Long,

Tangkhul Katamnao Long and Career Path finder at Phungyar Headquarters and Ukhrul respectively. Meetings and discussions with the primary school authorities, teachers and SMDC members have brought to light the necessary provisions for the schools such as separate toilets for boys and girls, potable drinking water, mid-day meal kitchen, etc.  

Sports and Literary programme with partner village schools

Sports and Literary programme for the partner villages were carried out for both the clusters of Phungyar and Chingai. The schools were facilitated to organise extracurricular activities such as sports and literary meet in the respective schools.

Education Mela for partner village schools

Two (2) Education Melas were organised for both the clusters on 29th Sept and 27th Oct 2017 for Chingai and Phungyar Cluster respectively. A total of 707 students (401 male and 306 female) participated in the education mela. During the Mela, the students took part in various activities such as drawing, singing, choreography, recitation, folk dance, race, etc. Other participants were parents, teachers, Assistant Inspector of Schools (AIs), Deputy Inspector of Schools (DIs), Educationists, village leaders and concerned members of the community.

Literary and Sports meet for partner High schools

A two day district level talent meet with the theme “Re-defining Education was organised on 9th-10th November 2017 for the partner high schools. About 1209 students from our partner schools under the aegis of Principals Association of Recognised Schools (PARS) participated in the program. The students showcase their talents indifferent activities such as Essay writing, Debate, Choreography, Group Song, Solo, Fine Art, Declamation and Quiz. About 4000 members comprising of students from lower classes, parents, teachers from non partner schools witnessed the two-day

District Level Talent Meet. During this special occasion, Mr. Leishiyo Keishing, Hon‟ble MLA as the Chief Guest posthumously released the “Hand Book for Empowerment of Adolescent High School Student”, written by the Late Mrs. Thotchuila Hongray, Founder and Former Executive Secretary, PASDO. The Books were given out to the Class IX and X students, parents and Teachers who participated in the programme free of cost.

Career Guidance programme for partner High School

One day career guidance programme was organised on 7th Sept 2017for the partner high school students (PARS) focussing on four topics- Medical, Engineering, Civil services and Defence services. A total of 485 students got oriented on the topics taken up by four resource persons who were experienced in the respective fields.

Adolescent empowerment and development programme

Statistically 667 high school students from the 9 partner High Schools were oriented on the topics- Environment Education, Human Rights, Gender, Drugs/ Substance Abuse, Sex Education, Human Trafficking And POCSO Act.

Commemoration of Earth Day

Commemoration of Earth Day programme was carried out along with the Partner High Schools Students on 22nd April 2017. On record 687 students including teachers and other invitees/stakeholders participated in the celebration. The programme consisted of pledge taking, distribution of saplings to the students and planting of ornamental plants and trees.

Awareness & Capacity Building on climate change issues for partner village community

Thirteen (13) awareness cum workshops on climate change were organised in partner villages of both the clusters. In all 509 members including parents, teachers, church leaders and youth participated during the workshop.

Training, Documentation & Conservation of Medicinal Plants & Indigenous flowers

Plantation and Maintenance of the Medicinal Plants & indegeneous flowers is being done from time to time by the Khuilungtang Community along with PASDO staff. 

Training on value addition

Two (2) nos. comprising of three days training on food processing were organised at PHILA FOODS training centre during 13th -15th June 2017 and 20th -22nd Feb 2018. A total of 46 participants were given intensive training on food and fruit processing and preservation. It accounted for both theory and practical training in making fruit candies, baking, pickleling, jam, squash/ juice etc.

Area and District level Workshop/ consultation on climate change

A district level consultative meeting was organised at PHILA FOODS Training Centre. 47 members participated during the consultative meeting cum workshop. 

Recreation programme

On two occasions the Staff along with the Executive members of PASDO had a recreation programme at Nungshang Kong and Halang Park.
